BIO

Benjamin Schmid was born in Vienna in 1968 and studied in Salzburg, Vienna and at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Over the next several years, Schmid went on to win further competitions such as the Leopold Mozart Prize, Yehudi Menuhin Prize, Beethoven Prize and the Audience Prize at the International Carl Flesch Violin Competition.

Although his repertoire covers a wide musical period, he frequently interprets pieces for violin and orchestra by the main Austrian authors such as Berg, Goldmark, Korngold, Kreisler, Mozart, Muthspiel, Schönberg, or Webern.

He allocates a proportion of his time to chamber music, especially to Mozart repertoire, and usually plays duet with pianist Ariane Haering, with whom he has made several recordings. He is also very fond of Jazz, and that has led him to record music by Grapelli, Muthspiel, or Sabina Hank, amongst others.

He has appeard with prestigious orchestras such as the Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Houston Orchestra, Wiener Philharmoniker, Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, or the Leipzig Gewandhaus, amongst others, as well as several Spanish orchestras.
One highlight of his career was his performance with the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of Riccardo Chially at the Leipzig Gewandhaus, and the concert with Alban Berg, with whom he later toured through Japan. He has been invited by important festivals such as the ones held in Heidelberg, Ostertöne, Hamburg, Belfast, Ambers, Vienna, etc. As a chamber musician, Benjamin Schmid has worked with notorious instrumentalists such as the Clarinet player Sabine Meyer, or the Cellist Clemens Hagen.

In 2004 he debuted with the Wiener Philharmoniker at Salzburg’s Festival, and has later regularly collaborated with the festival since 1986 when he appeared with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and under the baton of Sir Yehudi Menuhin. Since then, he has appeared at the festival in numerous orchestra concerts, solo recitals, chamber music concerts, and Jazz concerts, such as the one he recently did with Hélène Grimaud and Clemens Hagen. In 2007 Benjamin Schmid interpreted at the Musikverein in Viena the Violin Concerto by Korngold with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Seiji Ozawa. Recently he has performed with the same orchestra under Valery Gergiev’s batton.

He has done numerous recordings of pieces by Bach, Paganini, Brahms or Vivaldi, and has even been awarded several prizes for them such as the Prize for the Best Chamber Music Album (Sony Classical), or the Editor’s Choice from Gramophon (Oehms Classics).
