Guillermo García Calvo

Guillermo García Calvo is currently one of the most outstanding Spanish conductors. From the season 2017-2018, Guillermo García Calvo is Generalmusikdirektor at Theater Chemnitz and the Robert Schumann Philharmonie, and, since January 2010, he is also the Musical Director of the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
Born in Madrid in 1978, he graduated at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna. He made his debut as opera conductor in 2003 with Hänsel und Gretel at Schlosstheater in Schöburn. Since then, he has maintained a strong relation with the Wiener Staatsoper, in which he has led more than two hundred performances and half a hundred operas, such as Macbeth, Die Zauberflöte, La traviata, Il barbiere di Siviglia, L’elisir d’amore and Lucia de Lammermoor. He has been a regular guest conductor at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, leading La Cenerentola, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Carmen, Don Giovanni orPechêurs du perles. He has also collaborated with Aalto-Theater in Essen in Nabucco, La bohème, I puritani and La traviata, among others.

He made his Spanish operatic debut in 2011 with Tristan und Isolde at the Ópera de Oviedo and achieved a resounding success with the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias.
He later reappeared with this orchestra in Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. It was especially noteworthy the first recording of Ramón Carnicer’s opera Elena y Malvina, which he recorded together with the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España.
Guillermo García Calvo has a prominent activity in the symphonic field, in charge of important orchestras: Orquesta Nacional de España, London Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, Orquesta de RTVE, Hamburger Symphoniker, Orquesta de Valencia, Filarmonica del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Latvijas Nacionālais Simfoniskais Orķestris, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (Mexico), Orquestra de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Orquestra de la Comunitat Valencia-Palau de les Arts and the symphony orchestras of Bilbao, Tenerife, Madrid, Galicia and Principado de Asturias, among others.
Recent and future engagements include Un ballo in maschera, Die Fledermaus and the complete Wagner’s tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen at Theater Chemnitz, Siegfried at Ópera de Oviedo, Stiffelio with Graham Vick at Festival Verdi in Parma, L’elisir d’amore at Wiener Staatsoper and New National Theater Tokyo, Rigoletto at Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Tempestad at Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid, La Gioconda at Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Goyescas at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, an opera gala with Juan Diego Flórez at Müpa in Budapest and his début at Festival Internacional de Música de Canarias together with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, among many others.
Guillermo García Calvo has been given several prizes for his musical career, such as the Codalario Award for Best Artist 2013 and the Leonardo da Vinci Award in 2017.
