In the coming seasons the young Madrilean conductor will take charge of the musical direction of an important number of productions of Teatro de la Zarzuela.
The relationship between maestro García Calvo and this Theater has been consolidated since his debut in 2012 with Ay ¡Ay, amor!, A double program that included El amor brujo and La vida breve. Since then he has conducted titles such as the new production of ‘Curro Vargas’ (2014) with stage direction from Graham Vick, which received the Campoamor Award; the recovery of ‘La tempestad’ by Ruperto Chapí in concert version in 2017 or ‘Katiuska’ the last season.
In this 2019/2020 season, he will assume in February the conduction of ‘Farinelli’ in concert version, expected recovery work of Tomás Bretón.
Trained in Vienna, Guillermo García Calvo debuted at age 25 as an opera director in the Austrian capital. Since then, his international career has been consolidated until he became one of the most brilliant and beloved Spanish orchestra conductors. He is currently conducting regularly in theaters such as the Wiener Staatsoper – with which he maintains a close relationship, having directed more than 200 opera and ballet performances – the Deutsche Oper in Berlin or the Opera in Paris, where he has recently conducted ‘Don Giovanni’.
Guillermo García Calvo is also one of the most requested conductors in the theaters and auditoriums of Spain, where, to give two illustrative examples, in recent months he has assumed ‘La Gioconda’ at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, or ‘La tabernera del puerto ‘- production of the Teatro de la Zarzuela – at the Palau de Les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia.
Among the awards he has received throughout his solid and ascending career, the most recent is the Opera XXI Award that has been awarded this year for the musical direction of ‘Siegfried’ at the Opera de Oviedo.
