BIO
Spanish-British soprano Sylvia Schwartz is renowned as one of the leading sopranos of her generation, combining profound musicality with great lyricism and exquisite attention to detail.
With a career forged in many of the world’s most prestigious theatres and festivals, Sylvia has brought her signature energy and discerning taste to a wide variety of leading roles. An experienced performer at the height of her powers, she is equally at home on the stages of La Scala in Milan, Staatsoper Berlin, the Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Teatro Real in Madrid, Bolshoi Theatre, and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Sylvia has also been a frequent guest at numerous international festivals, including Edinburgh, Baden-Baden, Salzburg, andVerbier. Among her recent engagements are Donna Anna in Don Giovanni under the baton of András Schiff at the Felsenreitschule in Salzburg, as well as Eurydice in Philip Glass’s Orphée for the Teatro Real in Madrid and her first Rosalinde in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus at The Grange Festival.
MORE
In the concert world, Sylvia is very active, collaborating with pianists such as Malcolm Martineau, Wolfram Rieger, Simon Lepper, and Helmut Deutsch, as well as with conductors of the calibre of Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Philippe Jordan, René Jacobs, Fabio Luisi, Iván Fischer, Sir Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Marc Minkowski, Ivor Bolton, Zubin Mehta, Helmut Rilling, and Alain Altinoglu, both for opera and concert performances.
Of particular note is her extraordinary magic in recitals, where she is an absolute mistress of the genre, covering the entire European repertoire from simple Renaissance folk melodies to contemporary composers, with works written specifically for her. Her skill as a storyteller through song has made her a regular on stages such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, Philharmonie Berlin, Musikverein Wien, Sydney Opera House in Australia, and countless other concert halls and festivals.
In recent seasons, Sylvia has begun to explore more dramatic repertoire, including roles such as Donna Anna and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Micaëla in Carmen, Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare, Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Fiordiligi in Così Fan Tutte. On the symphonic stage, Sylvia’s extensive repertoire includes works by Bach and Mozart, Mendelssohn and Brahms, Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony, as well as symphonies by Mahler and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater.
This autumn she will release an album of French song in addition to a recording of Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges.
